Speak 3 discussion questions.

1. Discuss what precipates Melinda's skipping school and what she does.
She has got in a fight with her mom and she missed the bus and was thinking, I cut, we cut, it cuts. so she then goes to the hospital.

2.Was being a child better than being a teenager? In what ways? In what ways is it better to be older? Why is it hard to be in between childhood and adulthood?
Being a child is better than a teenager because you younger and you have less responsibities. The ways that it is better to be older is because you can have more freedom and do more things you want to. Its hard between those ages because you are going through a change and also going through akward stages.

3.Analyze the refrence to the symbols in The Scarlet Letter and how Melinda would adapt the letter "A".
The scarlet letter would relate to Melinda because she would like to fit in and feel more of a person after everything had happened.

4. Discuss the dissolution of Melinda and Heather's friendship and the effect it has on Melinda. What is the meaning of friendship?
Melinda and Heathers relationship wasnt a real one but Melinda had sit with Heather at lunch because she had no one and she was new but heather felt weird hanging out with her necause Melinda doesnt fit in with everyone and she wants people to like her.

5.Analyze the events and effects of Valentines Day on Melinda and the aftermath.
Valentines day was not a very good day for Melinda because of all the lovers getting the hearts for eachother but the only thing for her that was relatied to that was the rape.

6.Melinda wishes her science teacher would teach them about love and betrayal instead of the birds and the bees. Where do we learn about things like that? Can we learn about love from a book? Explain?
Melinda's teacher, when she gave the birds and bees talk it also did have to do with love and betrayal because it does happen. It is weird because love and betrayal is supposed to be two totally different things and when the teacher was talking about it Melinda felt like it was related to her.

7.Discuss what happenes when Melinda is placed in In-school suspension. How would you react to this situation?
In school suspension melinda felt even more lonely and depressed. To make it even worse Andy the guy who raped her was in there and so was Mr. Neck, the teacher who hates her, also.

8.Analyze Mr. Freemans effect on Melinda, inside and outside the art class. Do you agree with his statement, "when people dont express themselves, they die one piece at a time."?
Mr. Freeman's effect on Melinda is a big one because she becomes really creative and good at things inside of class because of what he had told her. He has figured her out and now she is trying to be herself and not let anyone get to her. When people are not themselves they die slowly because the real them is dying to get out, but they do not want to be judged.

9.Mr. Freeman tells his class "you must walk alone to find your soul." What does this mean? Is it true? What is a soul?
I think that this statement means that you have to find out who you are and what you are about on the inside before you try to figure anyone out. I think this is most deff. true because everyone needs to know who they are. A soul is what you are on the inside and it is who you are as a person.

10.Mr. Freeman also says that "art is about making mistakes and learning from them." What else is like this? Explain.
Life is what is just like that, you make your mistakes, and you learn from them. no one is perfect but you can at least try your best and do what you love in life.

11. Examine Melinda's self-image and her survival techniques after Heather's rejection.
Melinda's self image and survival techniques are to just get through the day by her self and to not be near anyone. She is confused because she was the only person who was nice to Heather on the first day and it makes her mad because no one likes her.

12.Examine Melinda's revelation about the night of the party and its residual effext on her.
Her revelation about the night f the party was very very nerve recking for her, she felt very alone and after that night she has not been the same. Everyone hates her. She wants to tell Rachel but she will not beileve her because of what had happened and it is her now boyfriend.

Speak 2 Discussion questions.

1. Discuss Melinda's decline, including physical symptoms.
Melinda's decline was getting worse and worse each day, after what had happened to her at the party and the result it cause that everyone hated her. Her physical symptoms were she was hurting herself and making her bleed she also was cutting her wrists and actually made a suicide attempt. It is not healthy for her.

2.Analyze the social studies "debate" and its aftermath. Note who challenges the teacher and the position each person takes. How do you feel about this type of debate? Is the teacher right or wrong? Do students have a right to challenge a teacher?
The debate was opened by Mr. Neck and he was telling the children his feelings, but whenever someone had told him their feelings he got really mad and took it the wrong way. The person was Dave Patrakis who never talks but stood up and told Mr. Neck his true feelings. It was unusual for him to do such a thing. I think the teacher was wrong and that everyone does have the right to express what they think it right, not just one person. Also, students have a right to challenge teachers because in the world were all equal and we all deserve to have our voices heard.

3.Who is a "real" american? What do you thing of Mr. Necks opinion? Going by his definition, are some of you not really Americans?
I think that everyone is a real american weather they beileve so or not. Everyone has the right to say what they feel or think is right, and NO one is better than anyone. Mr. Necks opinion was wrong in my thoughts but thats just me. He doesnt like to hear what anyone else says but from his self. I think that everyone is a real american and will always be. Good and the Bad.

4. Discuss the Thanksgiving dinner for Melinda's family and why this is significant.
Thanksgiving dinner for Melinda's family was a well strange one. Most familys across the world spend this day giving thanks with eachother for everything they have. It is a day to spend with the family. Her family was different, the dad and Melinda wanted pizza and nothing to do with eachother, but the mother was up all night making a dinner. She forgot to make the turkey so it was really messed up and it ending up having to be chopped up into solid frozen peices. Then the mother left work and the other two ordered pizza, some family get together.

5. Analyze Melinda's statement about her parents, "I bet they'd be divorced by now if I hadn't been born" What does this reflect about her self esteem?
Melinda's statement was not a good thing on her self esteem. It makes her think that she is the only reason her parents are together and she is making them suffer to keep her happy. She is becoming very depressed and nothing that is happening to her is good for her.

6. Examine Melinda's references to her secret and what this revels about her relationship with her parents. What do you think happened at the party?
What happened at the party was something bad, and had caused her whole life to change in just one night at a stupid party. She called the cops because she was raped and everyone now hates her. But, they dont know the real truth and she cant tell anyone not even her own parents because she is scared.

7. Discuss Melinda's athletic ability, her attitude toward being on the basketball team, and the comparison she makes between basketball and life.
Melinda's athletic ability in basketball was amazing, she was so good that the coach even asked her to join the team. To bad her grades weren't good enough. So they made a deal with her if she taught the kids how to shoot like her then she would get an automatic A in gym. The comparison was that this was all like her life.. but a little better.

8.Analyze the deterioration of the relationship betweet Melinda and heather. Why is that people sometimes more when they can get something out of us? Are the Martha's good friends to Heather? Why or why not?
The relationship between Melinda and Heather is not a very close one it is just that melinda was nice to her since she was new and was sitting alone at the table at lunch. People are nicer to you like that because they think that if they get on your good side that they will get what they want eventually. The Martha's are not good friends for Heather, or anyone. They seem fake and act like you have to be something special or better than anyone to be a part of there clique.

9. What should we value in other people? What qualities are inportant in a person? What do you usually notice about people? Doest that really matter?
I think we should value other peoples personality and there character. I dont go upon looks its cruel and not flattering at all. The important qualities in someone is that they are someone who you can be yourself around and not fake. I usually notice their eyes and smile. I can tell if someone has a warm heart sometimes, but i dont judge. I dont think it really matters what your like on the outside but what is on the inside counts.

10. Examine Melinda's reference to IT.
Melinda's reference to IT was that he was very childish, immature and he was trying to be like an adult. She was telling us about how he acted at the doughnut shop when she had skipped school and he was. She doesnt like "it" very much because what had happened at the party that one summer night.

11. Discuss the school conference with Melinda's parents and the aftermath. What do you think about Melinda's suicide attempt? Was it real? What does it indicate? What do you think about her mothers reaction?

Relationship scenario!

The warning sign of physical or emotional abuse in a dangerous relationship has many different reasons why this could be happenening. First, jealousy is a big cause in this problem. The other person in your relationship could think something you doing with someone else is totally different then what it really is so they get mad and could either hurt you physically or emotionally which both hurt. Also someone who is controlling over you and telling you what to do or that your not good enough is also a sign. It is not right for someone to tell you your not good enough so dont let it get to far or you could be hurt also. Alcohol or Drugs is also a reason some people are in dangerous relationships, they get so caught up in it that they dont even care what they are doing wrong. This is all bad and it can cause very bad things to go wrong, so if you notice any of these signs know to get out of the relationship or get help because something bad may happen.

Abuse Scenario

If i had a friend that looked like they had been beaten up or had any harm done to them I would first go to them and ask what is wrong. I would let my friend know that I was here for him/her and that they could trust me with everything they told me. When they told me i would do my best to help them and get them back to them normal self. I also would Get them to go to a counsler and talk it out and get them some help. If my friend was really hurting and didnt want to talk to anyone i would at least notify her parents so they could talk to him/her about what is going on, because if i was in that position I would want one of my friends doing the same for me.

Speak Discussion Questions.

1. Analyze Melinda's reaction to the first day of high school and why her fears seem more intense than that of others. Analyze why she says, "I am outcast."
She says she is an outcast because of what had happened during the summer when she was at a party and she had called the cops and everyone still remembers it and hates her for it. She lost her friends and everyone doesnt like her for it. Even though she felt like she had to do it, people still treat her worst than others because of what had happened. That makes her feel an outcast because she has no one to go to or talk to after what had happened over the summer.

2. Examine the meanings of the "clans" and the prevalence of high school cliques. Why do we sometimes not like people who are really good things, like sports, music, art, or school? Is this fair? Are adults like this?
I think the meaning of clans and the prevalence of high school cliques is that there is a lot of groups of people who are all the same and dont really know what the people in other cliques are really all about. They only like to do things with their clique and are obviously afraid of a change or being with people who are into other things that they dont like. I dont think it is fair because alot of people dont give other people the chance to see how they are. Adults are not as much as the way, as kids our age is.

3. Discuss the "first ten lies they tell you in high school." Compare with your first day. So you think Melinda's assumption that they are "lies" are valid?
The ten lies that you are told first in highschool is actually true, i have been to different highschools but each school basically tells you the same thing and most of the time it is not true. The lies just seem to make you beileve it and feel safe but in the end it does not work.

4. Examine Melinda's characterization of the teachers. What do these descriptions reflect?
The descriptions of the teachers is that they are very boring and dull. Mr. Neck didnt like her and he made her sit in the front of the class because he said he had his eye on her. In lunch when she was trying to get out he made her mad because he was acting like he was out to get her.

5. Discuss Mr. Freeman's approach to teaching art. Have you had similar experiences in classes with his type of teaching style?
Yes i have, my art teacher at my old school had the same type of teaching style and it was for everyone like Melindas class.

6. Discuss Melinda's home life. How does communication breask down in Melinda's family? What could each person do to improve it? If you were a parent, how would communication be in your family?
The communication in her family is through writing notes on the fridge. They could inprove it by talking to eachother or sitting down at dinner together and having family time. If i were a parent communication would be a big thing to me and we would have to always talk.

7. Discuss the interaction between Melinda and Heather. Are they friends? What brings them together?
Melinda and Heather seem to be friends, but at first Melinda saw her in lunch because she was new and she sat with her. They may become friends further on in the book.
8. Are we sometimes different people on the outside than we are on the inside? How? Why is this true, do you think?
YES. alot of people are way different on the outside than they are on the inside. They put on a show to get people to like them or to just fit in and are loosing the real them.

The best thing i did this summer

The best thing I did this summer was when I went to North Carolina and spent the summer with my best friends and grandma. We had such a awesome time and it was so much fun. I loved being able to spent a lot of time with them and actually feel like i was away from reality. I also went back to Myrtle Beach, Sc where i lived previously before Georgia and spent a week there with my friends since i never see them anymore. We went to the beach and just had a good time. So basically hanging out with all my closest friends and family was one of the best things i did this summer. Since i didnt go to Disney World like i always do that was a bummer but in the end it all turned out great! I am glad i got to it was awesome, spending time with the people i love before yet another school year!(:
